Description

A classic, soft, and fluffy loaf of Amish white bread, perfect for sandwiches, toast, or simply enjoying with a meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup warm water (110-120°F)
  • ⅓ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 packet (2 ¼ teaspoons) instant yeast
  • 3 cups all-purpose flour
  • ¾ teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable or canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, stir together the warm water, granulated sugar, and instant yeast. Let it sit for about 10 minutes, or until bubbles form on the surface.
  2. In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook attachment, combine the flour and salt. Add the oil and the yeast mixture to the bowl. Turn the mixer to medium speed and knead the dough until it no longer sticks to the sides of the bowl, about 10 minutes.
  3. Roll the dough into a tight ball and transfer it to a greased bowl. Cover with plastic wrap and place in a warm area. Let it rise for about 60 to 90 minutes, until it has doubled in size.
  4. Deflate the dough and shape it into a log that will fit in a 9×5 loaf pan. Cover with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for another 50 to 60 minutes, until doubled in size.
  5. Preheat your oven to 350°F about 20 minutes before the second rise is done.
  6. Once the dough has finished rising, bake in the oven for 25 to 30 minutes, or until golden brown.
  7. After baking, brush the crust with melted butter and allow the loaf to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes. Then remove from the pan and transfer to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Notes

Ensure to keep an eye on the water temperature when activating the yeast; too hot can kill it, while too cold can hinder its activation.
