- 1 large egg
- 1/2 cup molasses
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- Royal icing for decoration

Instructions
- In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, baking soda, ground ginger, ground cinnamon, ground cloves, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and brown sugar together until the mixture is light and fluffy.
- Mix in the large egg, molasses, and vanilla extract until combined.
- Gradually stir in the dry ingredients to the wet mixture until just combined. Avoid overmixing.
- Divide the dough into two halves, wrap each half in plastic wrap, and refrigerate for at least 2 hours or overnight.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
- On a floured surface, roll out the chilled dough to about 1/4 inch thick. Cut out shapes with cookie cutters.
- Place the cookies on baking sheets lined with parchment paper and bake for 8-10 minutes.
- Allow the cookies to cool on a wire rack before decorating with royal icing and optional sprinkles.
