Description

A delightful dish that combines tender potatoes, savory ham, and a rich cheese sauce, perfect for family meals or gatherings.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups diced ham
  • 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (russet or Yukon gold work well)
  • 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup diced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 tablespoon butter

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, sauté until they become translucent.
  3. Stir in the flour along with salt and pepper, cooking for another minute to eliminate the raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, and bring to a simmer, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens.
  4. In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom. Follow this with half of the diced ham and half of the cheddar cheese.
  5. Pour half of the creamy sauce mixture over the top of the layers. Repeat this layering process with the remaining ingredients.
  6. Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  7. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, or until the dish is bubbly and the top is golden brown.
  8. Allow the dish to sit for a few minutes before serving to let it set.

Notes

Choose starchy potatoes for creaminess. Allow the casserole to rest after baking for easier serving.
