Description
A delightful dish that combines tender potatoes, savory ham, and a rich cheese sauce, perfect for family meals or gatherings.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 cups diced ham
- 4 cups thinly sliced potatoes (russet or Yukon gold work well)
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1 cup heavy cream
- 1 cup milk
- 1/2 cup diced onion
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/4 cup flour
- 1 tablespoon butter
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the onions and garlic, sauté until they become translucent.
- Stir in the flour along with salt and pepper, cooking for another minute to eliminate the raw flour taste. Gradually whisk in the milk and cream, and bring to a simmer, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens.
- In a greased baking dish, layer half of the sliced potatoes at the bottom. Follow this with half of the diced ham and half of the cheddar cheese.
- Pour half of the creamy sauce mixture over the top of the layers. Repeat this layering process with the remaining ingredients.
- Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15 to 20 minutes, or until the dish is bubbly and the top is golden brown.
- Allow the dish to sit for a few minutes before serving to let it set.
Notes
Choose starchy potatoes for creaminess. Allow the casserole to rest after baking for easier serving.
