Description

Homemade crispy fried onions that are perfect for topping on green bean casseroles, burgers, and more.


Ingredients

Scale
  • 2.5 cups Homemade (or store-bought) buttermilk
  • 4 cups Thinly sliced onions, halved and in rings
  • 3 cups All-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp Kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp Fresh ground pepper
  • 4 cups Vegetable oil

Instructions

  1. Soak the onions in buttermilk for at least 10 minutes.
  2. In a shallow dish, combine flour, kosher salt, and ground pepper.
  3. Heat vegetable oil to about 375°F.
  4. Dredge buttermilk-soaked onions in the flour mixture.
  5. Fry the coated onions in hot oil until golden brown.
  6. Drain on a paper towel-lined plate and repeat with remaining onions.
  7. Store in an airtight container or serve immediately.

Notes

For extra flavor, consider adding garlic powder, dried herbs, or grated Parmesan to the flour mix.
