Description

A classic comfort food dish featuring creamy layers of tender potatoes and melted Gruyère cheese.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 1 small onion, minced
  • 1 garlic clove, grated
  • 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped or 1/2 tsp dried thyme
  • 3 tbsp flour (use gluten-free if desired)
  • 1 1/2 cups milk or heavy cream
  • 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
  • 1 pinch ground nutmeg (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 4 lb potatoes, sliced thin
  • 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking dish with butter.
  2. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add minced onion and grated garlic, cooking until softened.
  3. Stir in fresh or dried thyme and flour to create a paste.
  4. Gradually whisk in the milk or heavy cream until smooth. Allow to simmer and thicken.
  5. Stir in shredded Gruyère cheese until melted. Add nutmeg and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
  6. Layer thin potato slices in the baking dish, pouring half of the cheese sauce over the first layer.
  7. Add another layer of potatoes and pour the rest of the sauce on top. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top.
  8. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 20-30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
  9. Cool slightly before serving.

Notes

Use starchy potatoes like Russets or Yukon Golds for best results. Slice potatoes evenly for uniform cooking. This dish pairs beautifully with various main dishes.
