A classic comfort food dish featuring creamy layers of tender potatoes and melted Gruyère cheese.

- 3 tbsp butter
- 1 small onion, minced
- 1 garlic clove, grated
- 1 tsp fresh thyme, chopped or 1/2 tsp dried thyme
- 3 tbsp flour (use gluten-free if desired)
- 1 1/2 cups milk or heavy cream
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- 1 pinch ground nutmeg (optional)
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 4 lb potatoes, sliced thin
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a large baking dish with butter.
- In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter. Add minced onion and grated garlic, cooking until softened.
- Stir in fresh or dried thyme and flour to create a paste.
- Gradually whisk in the milk or heavy cream until smooth. Allow to simmer and thicken.
- Stir in shredded Gruyère cheese until melted. Add nutmeg and season with salt and black pepper to taste.
- Layer thin potato slices in the baking dish, pouring half of the cheese sauce over the first layer.
- Add another layer of potatoes and pour the rest of the sauce on top. Sprinkle remaining cheese on top.
- Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 45 minutes. Remove foil and bake for another 20-30 minutes until golden and bubbly.
- Cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Use starchy potatoes like Russets or Yukon Golds for best results. Slice potatoes evenly for uniform cooking. This dish pairs beautifully with various main dishes.
