Delightful heart-shaped iced cookies perfect for kids to celebrate Valentine’s Day with creativity and sweetness.
Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon baking powder
- 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ½ cups white sugar
- 1 egg
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
- ½ teaspoon almond extract (optional)
- 1/4 teaspoon salt
- For the Icing:
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons meringue powder
- 5–7 tablespoons water
- Food coloring (your choice)
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
- In a bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside.
- In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and white sugar until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
- Crack in the egg, and add the vanilla extract and almond extract if using. Beat until well combined.
- Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until incorporated, being careful not to overmix.
- Roll out the dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thick. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and place them on ungreased baking sheets.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes or until lightly golden around the edges. Allow to cool completely on wire racks before decorating.
- In a large bowl, combine powdered sugar and meringue powder, then add water gradually until smooth and thick. Color the icing with food coloring if desired.
- Once cookies are cool, decorate with icing using piping bags or utensils. Let the icing set fully before serving.
Notes
Chilling the dough for at least 30 minutes can make rolling easier. Test one cookie for baking time verification as ovens may vary.
