Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 1 1/2 cups granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • Royal icing (for decorating)
  • Gel food coloring (various colors)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Your Ingredients: Gather all ingredients and preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Mix Dry Ingredients: Whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt in a bowl; set aside.
  3. Cream Butter and Sugar: Beat butter and sugar in a large bowl until light and fluffy, about 3-4 minutes.
  4. Add Egg and Vanilla: Mix in the egg and vanilla extract until fully incorporated.
  5. Combine Wet and Dry Mixtures: Gradually add flour mixture to wet ingredients, mixing until a dough forms; avoid over mixing.
  6. Chill the Dough: Wrap dough in plastic wrap and refrigerate for about 30 minutes.
  7. Roll and Cut Cookies: Roll out the dough on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thickness and cut into heart shapes.
  8. Bake: Bake for 8-10 minutes until edges are golden; cool completely on wire racks.
  9. Prepare Royal Icing: Divide icing into bowls, adding gel food coloring to create desired colors.
  10. Decorate Using Wet on Wet Technique: Once cookies are cool, decorate with royal icing, using the wet on wet technique.
  11. Let Icing Dry: Allow decorated cookies to set for a few hours or overnight.

Notes

For best results, chill the dough properly and use piping bags for decoration. Experiment with flavors and colors!
